Youth Mentor (Jordan's Principle)

Job overview

As a Youth Mentor for Jordan's Principle, you will work directly with First Nations youth ages 12 to 18 to offer guidance, mentorship, and support. You will help mentees with life skills, emotional development, and cultural connections, providing a safe space for them to grow and express themselves. Your role will also include advocating for their rights, promoting their mental health, and fostering their personal and academic success.

Key responsibilities

• Develop strong, trusting, and culturally sensitive relationships with Indigenous youth
• Provide mentorship, academic support, and life skills coaching
• Encourage and foster personal growth by setting goals and tracking progress
• Help youth navigate challenges, including mental health, social relationships, and academic struggles
• Promote cultural pride and Indigenous identity through mentorship and activities
• Serve as an advocate for youth, ensuring they have access to the resources and services they need
• Collaborate with families, schools, and community organizations to ensure holistic support for youth
• Maintain accurate records and report on mentee progress when necessary

Qualifications

• Experience working with youth, preferably Indigenous youth, in a mentorship, counseling, or related role
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to connect with young people
• Deep understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values
• Ability to be a positive role model and offer guidance through challenges
• Empathetic, patient, and understanding of the unique needs of Indigenous youth
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks
• Must have a valid driver's licence
• Criminal record check is a mandatory requirement

Preferred skills

• Knowledge of Jordan's Principle and its mission to support Indigenous children and families
• Experience in youth development, social work, or a related field
• Background in facilitating cultural activities or programming for Indigenous youth
